How to Organize Your Odd-Shaped Closet

Depending on the style of your home and when the home was built, you might have the problem of odd-shaped closets. While it might seem as though these spaces don’t matter much because they are behind closed doors, the size and shape of your closet does make a difference when it comes to storing items. If you have odd cut-outs, a misplaced window or slanted walls in your closet, you might have a hard time deciding where everything should go and how your belongings should fit. Here are some tips on making the most of every inch, even in an odd-shaped closet:

Install shelving on a sloping wall

If you have an upstairs closet or a space in your attic with a slanted wall, you might be at a loss as to how you can use that space. Buy special brackets made particularly for sloped walls, then install shelves against the walls. The shelves toward the top of the wall should be narrower and the shelves toward the bottom should be deeper so that the fronts are all along the same vertical plane. Store smaller items, such as narrow purses or hair accessories, on the smaller shelves and larger items, like shoes or briefcases, on the wider shelves.

Make the most of a window in your closet

One advantage of having a window in your closet is that it will bring in some daylight, limiting the usage of artificial lights, as long as you are choosing your outfits and getting dressed during the daytime hours! If you have to, you can block the window, but it’s better not to. Try installing tall shelves on either side of the window, and perhaps hooks over and under the window to hold scarves, belts and other hangable small items. Another option is to install clothing rods on either side of the window and a short shelf underneath for shoes or purses. One caveat: Put up curtains to keep harmful ultraviolet rays from fading your clothing!

Look at cutouts with a creative eye

Instead of considering odd corners, nooks and crannies a downfall, look at them as a bonus in your closet! You could fill the space with a cabinet dedicated to purses, accessories, stacked sweaters or whatever else you might not have room for otherwise. You could also find a small chest of drawers to hold lingerie and hosiery. Simply slide it in place and place a lamp or pretty vase on top. This is another great area to hang hooks to hold those ties, belts, purses and scarves out of the way.

The key to having a perfectly organized closet is not necessarily having a perfectly square and symmetrical closet, but instead, using the space that you do have to its advantage. Look at your empty closet with a discerning eye and, if necessary plan where everything should go on paper before installing anything or putting any of your items back. A professional organizer or custom closet professional can help you if you get stuck.
