Best Ways to Optimize the Use of Murphy Beds | Wall Beds | Tampa FL

Custom Murphy Bed

The Murphy Bed, also known as a wall bed, pull-down bed or fold down bed, is a bed that can be folded up vertically against a wall or in a closet. Since beds usually take up a great portion of a room which limits the type of activities you can or feel compelled to do inside that room (especially with small spaces in Tampa), Murphy Beds offer a great solution that is like having an extra room.

If you have small spaces like at an apartment, limited living room, and bedroom space, or host guests occasionally but still want to utilize that room for other activities, having a murphy bed is the perfect solution.

Before we get into all the possibilities and the benefits of wall beds, here’s a quick and interesting history of how the name came about.

History of How The “Murphy Bed” was Named

This bed is named after William Lawrence Murphy (1876-1959). There are 2 versions of this story and judging by the time of this invention, it wouldn’t be a big surprise.

One story suggests that William L. Murphy wanted more space to entertain his friends at his home and thus got inspired to create a solution. However, the alternate story is a bit more interesting where the incentive seemed much greater.

The preferred passed down story suggests that Murphy was wooing a woman but at the time, it was deemed inappropriate for a woman to enter a man’s bedroom. Since the bed took up much of the floor space in his apartment, he felt compelled to design a fold up bed to make the space more innocent. Not too long after, they married and Murphy borrowed money from his father to patent the design in 1900. Just imagine… all the men and women that appreciated this invention =)

Ways to Benefit from Murphy Beds

Family Home

Let’s say you’re living in a family home with all of the rooms occupied. When the living room is occupied and another family member wants their own space indoors, your options are limited. Now imagine being able to fold up your bed - it’s like having a whole new room! It can now double for a new type of room depending on the desired activity you’d like to create. Install murphy beds for all of your bedrooms and imagine how much larger your home will feel, all while occupying the same amount of space.

Guest Room

If you have or plan to have guests stay at your home, having a guest room is a great way to create comfort for them. It’s a great thing to think about your guests, but wouldn’t it also be great to fully utilize that room when your guests aren’t around?

By having Murphy Beds, you can create a hotel-like feel, which is a much greater option than a pull-out couch, although there is nothing wrong with that. However, if you want to provide greater hospitality while turning that space into more of a recreational room when not occupied, there’s not much that can beat fold up beds.

Types of Rooms You Can Create

Imagine what type of room you wish you had if you could build another room for your house, and who it would be for. What if you could create 2 more rooms- how could you use it? Take some time to think about that, because the solution won’t cost as much as adding on attachments to your home and thus, increasing your utility bills in addition to the building cost.

Here are some great ideas you can implement:

  • Home Theater Room
  • Arts / Crafts
  • Home Office
  • Yoga / Fitness
  • Game Room
  • Recreational Room
  • Play Room
  • Guest Suite

Conclusion

At first, Murphy Beds can be viewed as lower comfort or lower quality beds since they can be associated with pull-out couch beds. This is inaccurate. You can still have a high-quality murphy bed to use personally and create a new room at the same time, without the expensive cost of moving to a new house or building add-on rooms. You may also find that installing organized custom closet can complete the decor your room and for maximum storage.

Utilizing wall beds is much more sustainable, eco-friendly, and an extremely cost-effective solution that does not sacrifice quality. If you’re looking to expand your space, consider getting a murphy bed… or a few! There’s nothing like having smart and innovative systems installed at your house.
