The time has come: You need to do something about your closets. They might be very messy and unkempt, or the problem may be that you have too many belongings and not enough space in your closets to store it all. Your clothing may be wrinkled from being squashed between other garments, or it might take you a long time every morning to find each component of your outfit for the day. The options when it comes to custom closets might make you feel overwhelmed, however: You might not know how many clothing rods you need, or at which heights. If you have more than or fewer than the “average” number of pairs of shoes, you might be concerned that you won’t have enough room, or that space will be wasted with shoe racks. And how big should your drawers be in order to hold all of your hosiery and other small items?

Your local custom closet company will be able to fully customize your closet to the way that you live, and to the items that you have. Your local custom closet company will be able to fully customize your closet to the way that you live, and to the items that you have.are some tips on getting a good space estimate based on what you have already:

  • Separate your clothing in categories based on how long they are
For example, blouses, shirts and vests are “short hang” items, and usually require less than 42 inches of hanging space. Longer skirts, pants and coats are “medium hang.” Floor-length dresses, gowns and robes are “long” or “extra-long” hang, depending on their total length.
  • Count the number of items per category, then multiply by 1.5
This figure is roughly the number of inches that you’ll need for clothing rods at various heights. Some bulkier items will be wider than 1.5 inches, and some smaller items will be narrower, but this will give you a good idea of how much room you’ll need.
  • Count your pairs of shoes
Women’s shoes are an average of 8 inches wide, and men’s are an average of 9 inches wide, so add up the total width of the shoes that will be stored in your closet.
  • Think about what will go on the shelves
Sweaters and other knits should never be hung, as they can stretch out from being on the hangers, so you’ll want to fold and stack these. Jeans are also usually better stacked. Hats, purses and any items that you keep in boxes will also be stored on your closet shelves.
  • Consider how many drawers you use in your current bureau, armoire or dresser
If the goal is to make your closet a place to store all of your pajamas, undergarments and hosiery, then this is important, as you’ll want to be sure that your custom closet professional installs enough drawer space within the closet.
  • Separate your other items by type
Belts, ties, jewelry and scarves can be stored by using the appropriate closet accessories. Your closet designer will be able to evaluate how many accessories that you will need, based on how many of these types of items you own.

Your local custom closet company will be able to fully customize your closet to the way that you live, and to the items that you have. Call your closet professional to ask if they have a free consultation available, so you can discuss your needs in greater details.
